Club Announcements
Bill Hoff announced that recent member, Justin Wade, has resigned from the club for business reasons. We’ll miss him, wish him well, and hope that he’ll be back sooner than later..

Birthday Rotarians for December were introduced by “Maestro de Gateau”, Bill Mahoney. Bob Blassick was sponsored by Mike Silverman, joining in 1977; Rick Kobernick, sponsored by Bill Hoff, joined in 2006; Kris Stabler, sponsored by former club member Carole Gabrielson, joined in 1997. Longer-term members will remember former Rotarian Carole’s contagious laugh and the challenge she took on in adopting two children. Bringing in a new member not only helps Rotary, it’s a way to preserve your legacy.

President Bill announced the selection of Dominic Gualtieri as Rotarian of The Month, acknowledging his special efforts for the Santa Run club fund raiser.

The District Governor’s Newsletters were distributed to the tables. They are also to be found on the district web site in pdf format. The attractive, informative, hard-copy version is being printed through a volunteer donation. It is being done by Gov. Bill to reach out to Rotarians who don’t regularly use the Web, and to those who like to take a printed publication to their favorite “reading room” ! By alternating monthly between a donated print edition with one that’s solely on line, he hopes to not only reach out but also to encourage many to look for the newsletter on the District Web site.

Inducted into the club was Michael Cassady, sponsored by Bill Borst. President Hoff reminded Michael of his opportunities and responsibilities as an Arlington Rotarian, noting in the ceremony that, “The ideals of Rotary are entrusted to you. And the world will judge Rotary by you.” Like all Rotarians, he has been “loaned” a classification: in this case, it’s Government Administration – Villages. Michael lives in Arlington Heights. He works for the Village of Bensenville.

President Bill announce the club officer slate. It was approved unanimously by the voice vote of those attending. Current officers, terms expiring in June, 2010, and the slate for 2010-2011 are as follows:

Fine Masters Corner
Last Fine Master for the year was the Honorable Jim Hassenplug. He collected many regular and “happy” fines for the wait staff here at the Wellington, supplement the fines collected for them two weeks ago. The Wellington’s Rose and Gladys were appreciative, as were we for their service.

Very happy (think multiple digits!) was Bob Heller going to Florida for four months. Also happy were Ron Crawford in announcing that 50 bikes have been collected by the club, put in order and delivered to kids and adults in need. Mary Kay Chisholm was happy celebrating the start of her business practice 32 years ago...and for it still being here! Sue Dawson was happy to announce her guest, Linda, a new member to her firm. She cited her background in criminal law as a resource in case we Rotarians don’t drive as well as we’d like this holiday season. Though we wish the lawyers in the club well, may we not need their services this holiday season !

Dominic was happy for being Rotarian of the month. Visiting former Rotarian, Paul Hester, was happy to have brought back the sun from his travels, and a very happy donation to Rotary charities in celebration of his daughter’s recovery from cancer. Jim Burtucci was happy, on behalf of the club, that Bill Kmiecik and Ron Crawford were so successful with the Santa Run -- about 935 Santas registered this year compared to about 600 last year. Said Bill Kmiecik, “We’re expecting a sea of 1500 Santa’s next year”, running and raising funds for our Rotary charities. Sue Duchek was happy there were so many Rotarians rising to the occasion and signing Christmas carols at last week’s holiday event. The cooperation bodes well for the coming year !

Linda Borton happily announced that Whole Foods has already signed up as a sponsor for next year’s Run ! She was also happy for the many who showed up for the Vocational Committee meeting planning to help with the coming year. And a final Running Happy Fine was Mark Tauber who not only was happy as the first Rotarian over the finish line, he also pledged $100 if any Rotarian can beat him next year.

Curley Nebel was happy, as were we, for the help and spirit his daughter, Dawn, gave us in our singing at the party last week. This week’s Fine Master questions were seasonal. Do you know the name of another Christmas story by Charles Dickens? How about how many inches of snow are equal to an inch of rain? The Cricket on the Hearth, and 10 inches !
