ESL Literacy at the Arlington Heights Memorial Library

If you are a highly educated foreigner with some English language skills, then go to the Arlington Heights Memorial Library (AHML) where Katalin Zsupan will teach you English for free. You can expect to receive a one-on-one experience that can prepare you to pass the ACT, SAT or TOEFL (Test of English as A Foreign Language) examinations.

For the past 5 years, Katalin has been running the ESL Literacy Office at AHML. The program, using 35 volunteers and 8 computers, has grown to teaching 169 students natively speaking 27 different languages. About two-thirds of the students are Arlington Heights’ residents. There are no other libraries in the Chicago area offering the same service.

Coming to America in 1991 from Budapest, Hungary, Katalin became an American Citizen in 2000. In 1992 she and her family moved to Arlington Heights and recently the Sunrise Rotary Club of Arlington Heights awarded her a Paul Harris fellowship.

Katalin predicts that based on historic trends, the number of foreign-born residents of Arlington Heights will increase to 20% of the Arlington Heights total residents by the year 2010.

For further information, contact Katalin at 847-506-2632 or visit the library between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturdays.
