Happenings At October 16th Club Meeting

Birthdays are always special, but extra congratulations go to some select Rotarians at this club meeting (and special thanks in spirit to their Rotarian sponsors). Birthday Meister Bill Mahoney presided over the celebration of some of our longest tenured as well as newest members.

Curly Nebel, president in 1973-74 and 20+ year entertainment coordinator, joined the club in 1966. He was sponsored by baker Wally Aronsen of the Cake Box.

Joe Higgs joined in 1985 and was sponsored by George Harris of Harris Pharmacy.

Bill Borst became a part of Rotary in 1974, joining our club in 1989 through Paul Peale (rejoining after a stint as a snow bird).
Kerry Pearson was sponsored by realtor, now Wiscononite, Dane Hooper, and Ron Graeff was sponsored by Jim Miller of current Santa fame.
President Ron shared comments with the club. Former president of our sister club, Arlington Sunrise, Dave Palmer died this week. His obituary is in the Daily Herald.
Sue Duchek gets our thanks for again taking on the club’s Holiday Gift program. Sue said to save Sunday December 7th for shopping for the gifts at Target and wrapping at the Sports Page restaurant. A sign up list will be passed around again in the coming weeks. It’s a lot of fun for the whole family, along with some good food and fellowship...and some good deeds !
We’re continuing Rotary International’s polio fight. Fines from the October 23rd and 30th meetings will be used to contribute to the district-wide efforts. And we’re working on partnering with our “Sunshine” club (a.k.a., the morning Sunrise club) to solicit donations at the railroad station the morning of October 24th. If you can put a smile on your face like our sister Rotarian’s, plan on joining us. Contact Ron Crawford or be at next week’s meeting for details.
Ron welcomed back a familiar face, School District 59’s Superintendent Dan Schweers. Judging from the bandages on Tom Berry’s face, he is winning his battle against his opponent – we’re rooting for your side, Tom!
Kris Stabler of Arlington Race Course generously offered sponsorship to Rotarians and friends to bowl in the District 214 Community Education Director (Mike Field’s) fund raiser around 6 p.m. October 25th at Arlington Lanes. Put away as much as you can at the buffet, knock down as many pins and beverages as you can in good taste. Plan to bring some friends and some cash for the bar, and let Kris know. It will be a great time for a great cause.
Fine Master Jim Hassenplug solicited happy and sad fines: Scott Whisler expressed his feelings about the departure of the Hawks’ coach. Ron Crawford had a good time watching from five places as his daughter completed the Chicago Marathon. Terry Ennes celebrated bosses’ day. Kerry Pearson was happy about a family vacation to Disney World. And Linda Borton said thanks for help and coverage. If you missed the meeting, try Jim’s trivia – if Tennessee borders 8 states, what are they? If you can think of them, keep your dollar!
